The Mi-4 helicopter project began in 1951 in the Soviet Union. It fulfilled the need for a means of transporting soldiers and combat equipment during paratroop operations. The Mi-4 went into service in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s and the last helicopters were decommissioned in the 1980s. It served in both military and civilian versions in many countries.
